What are some of the ethical concerns about tyrosinemia?
Even though some individuals who have tyrosinemia have the ability to reproduce, they should consider with their partner whether or not they think it is a good idea to do so. If an affected patient reproduces, they will pass down a copy of the defective gene to their children. In some regions, such as Quebec, the frequency of the tyrosinemia type I allele is much greater than in other populations, so affected individuals should be particularly careful there.
