How is each type of tyrosinemia treated?
Tyrosinemia type I has no cure, but a restricted diet and the use of a prescription drug can treat the affected individuals and allow them to live relatively normal lives. Limiting the intake of tyrosine and phenylalanine and using a regiment of nitisinone tend to be sufficient. For patients who start treatment late, a liver transplant may be necessary.

Although the symptoms of tyrosinemia type II are different than those of tyrosinemia type I, the treatment is essentially the same. Doctors recommend a diet with little tyrosine or phenylalanine and prescribe nitisinone. Oral retinoids, which work through the vitamin A pathway, may also help affected individuals with painful hand or foot lesions.
